Students at six of the 11 Texans Can Academies campuses recently received free vision exams and prescription glasses from the Essilor Vision Foundation’s mobile optometry clinic. The Kids Vision For Life program partnered with the nonprofit charter high schools to provide mobile vision services to their students in need.

During the 2015-2016 school year, Essilor Vision Foundation’s mobile vision clinic traveled with two optometrists to six Texans Can campuses and provided complete vision exams to identify those who needed glasses. The exams identified 502 students needing vision correction. While the students were waiting in the mobile lab, new prescription glasses with name-brand frames were prepared for them to wear back to class. Soon the hallways were full of students wearing brand new glasses with pride. Most importantly they were able to see and read easier in the classroom.

“I love my new glasses,” said Dallas Can Academy senior Nancy Gonzalez. “I’d been having trouble reading, and it turns out I couldn’t see the words very well. I didn’t even know I needed glasses. Plus, they look pretty cool!” Gonzalez is not alone; 90% of children who need glasses do not have them.

“Good vision health is an essential component to educating the whole student,” said Richard Marquez, CEO of Texans Can Academies. “We know that students with poor vision are three times more likely to fail a grade. I am very grateful to the Essilor Vision Foundation for helping us provide the best resources and support for our students’ educational success. Our kids walk back to class looking great and feeling proud of their new glasses.”

Texans Can Academies are a unique network of 11 charter schools located in Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Houston and San Antonio. The schools are tuition-free, open enrollment, public high schools of choice serving students who have struggled in a traditional high school setting.
